Cobalt twist drills are more durable than high speed steels drills and are composed of a steel alloy with a higher concentration of cobalt compared to other steels. Cobalt will outlast HSS, it is more brittle because it is harder, making it ideal for working on stainless steel, platinum, and most other ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Because the cobalt drill is uniform in its hardness it can be sharpened repeatedly while retaining its high strength.
